Wooden interior bookcases past and present
Solid wood bookcases have stood the test of time, adapting to the needs and styles of each era.
Once reserved for elites and religious institutions, they symbolized knowledge and power. In the XVIIIᵉ century, with the rise of printing and increasing literacy, domestic libraries became democratized, becoming central elements of bourgeois interiors in the Louis XVI style. The XIXᵉ century saw a more industrial production of this furniture, reflecting the styles in vogue, from neoclassicism to the Louis Philippe style and the Empire style, characterized by the use of mahogany and the addition of metal columns and capitals.
Today, despite the digitalization of reading, wooden bookcases retain their usefulness and majesty. They offer aesthetic storage space for books, televisions, sometimes bars and secretaries, and of course the smallest decorative objects, while adding a warm, timeless touch to our interiors.
